NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
Tastes like Fear had me guessing all the way to the end. I never thought... Ms. Hilary does an amazing job of keeping us wondering with every page. There is so much going on and so many people that could have. I will stop right there.
I just adore this series. I love Marnie. She is tough, yet broken. She knows her strengths and weakness. And she always gets the job done.
My only complaint is that I listened to the first to books on audio, but the new books are not going to be published in the US. Bummer. Really love Justine Eyre!! But that said I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series (Quieter than Killing 03.09.17)
If you enjoy suspense books you really should pick up a copy of Someone Else’s Skin (bk1) and dive into the world of DI Marnie Rome.

Tastes Like Fear DI Marnie Rome 3 Sarah Hilary author 9781472226419 Books Reviews

Well - so much for MY detection skills, I had almost every character questioned, charged, and put behind bars, but I never did guess who was committing murder most foul, in this excellent third book in the D.I Marnie Rome crime series.

The latest case for DI Rome is the scary world of vulnerable teenage runaways. Someone is giving these runaways shelter - a place of warmth and safety and food. This 'someone' calls himself Harm, but as we are soon to discover, there is a definite 'taste of fear' when the nucleus of Harm's family is threatened in any way. Be warned!

Sarah Hilary doesn't shy away from the darker side of life, and it's easy to see how these teens can so readily fall into the clutches of those with sinister intentions. She takes us into dark and smelly subways, and run-down housing estates where crime is just a normal way of life for it's inhabitants.

There is some really intelligent writing here, and an all pervading air of menace throughout. Add to that, the fact that there are enough red herrings to supply a fish market, and you've got yourself a gem of a read. It's a true page turner that will have you waiting with bated breath for what's coming next - and you just know that there WILL be plenty coming next!

* Thank you to Netgalley and Headline Publishing for my free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review*
Sarah Hilary does it again with the third in the DI Marnie Rome thriller series.

This story takes us into the world of the vulnerable and homeless. What better group of people for our murderer to prey on? The investigation starts with a missing teen before we are taken on a roller-coast ride of a story where absolutely nothing and nobody is quite what it seems. Absolutely fantastic writing once again from Sarah Hilary – you can’t help but be hooked from the start.

It sounds odd for a thriller fan to say, but one of the things I really liked about this book was the lack of blood and gore. The violence all took place off the page and as a result, the story was somehow even more creepy and insidious. I was far more interested in WHY the perpetrator was doing things than what was actually done. Sarah Hilary doesn’t just get crime; she gets psychology which adds real depth to the writing.

I’ve rated this book in the trilogy slightly lower than the other two, only because I guessed ‘who-dunnit’ fairly early on. Maybe that’s unfair as I have loved the whole series, but I do like to be kept guessing. It certainly won’t stop me following DI Rome’s future cases…

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with an advance copy.
Superb! This is the third book in the DI Marnie Rome series and it is by far the best. Sarah Hilary has really hit her stride producing the most compelling characters in the most perfect of settings. A truly gripping story which will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Young homeless girls are being taken from the streets of London. But who cares? They’re only runaways after all. That is until May goes missing. May has loving parents and a doting sister and that’s when DI Rome and her team are called in to help return May to her family.

What no one else knows is that May is happy. May has a new home and a new family; living with Harm and his other chosen girls. Everything is calm, everything is the same, everything is safe. Until May makes the worst of mistakes….

Twists and turns come flying at you as you are drawn deeper into the story. You think you’re getting to grips with where the book is heading, but you’re probably not! Not really.

Marnie’s dark past makes an appearance (but Marnie wouldn’t be Marnie without Stephen Keele near by!). Something has changed though and I’m fascinated to see where Sarah Hilary is going to take them as the series progresses.

Full to the brim with shocks and surprises. I found it very difficult to put this book down. When I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about the characters and wondering what was going to happen next. Absolutely stunning work!

Five out of five stars.

Many thanks to Headline, NetGalley and Sarah Hilary for providing me with a copy of Tastes Like Fear in exchange for an honest review.
Excellent psychological crime story; enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.
Long awaited - not disappointed. Hilary's style is sparse, visual and fast. DI Marnie Rome, herself a dark and secretive character investigates a car crash caused by a young girl who has disappeared. She appears to be covered in scratches, which raises very real concerns for her safety and the twists associated with that are very satisfyingly, slowly revealed. DS Noah Jake again joins her to unravel the complexities they uncover. We learn a little more of Marnie's fraught relationship with her very damaged foster brother Stephen, more of Noah's life with Dan and more of how Marnie and Noah complement each other, making their partnership so good. The mood is sombre and dark, the dialogue crisp. In some ways the story is over too soon, such is the enjoyment of HIlary's style. Bring on Book 4.
