I read book one and was semi indifferent, but a friend loves this series and highly recommended it. I decided to keep going and read book 2 in the series.Sadly I didn't finish. Quit at like 30%. I enjoy a dark romance as much as the next person but this missed the mark for me.
Potential spoiler (and I apologize for that) but I just don't know how a woman can look at a man that locked her 3 yeAr old in a wood craft and threatened to burn her alive and think "man he's sexy, I'm so turned on"
Sure she finds out after the fact he poured water on the crate not gasoline but still. That's a strong nope, not happening for me.
Sorry. I hate leaving less than positive reviews but as someone who reads a good 300 books a year I've only come across 4 or 5 that I didn't finish and walked away from. Unfortunately this was one of them. Sorry

You know when you start reading and you just totally lose yourself in a book... well I'm sitting here sleep deprived this morning because the Morelli Family books were my bed partener until the wee hours this morning. It hooks you from the start with its deliciously evil, twisted head of the family and not so typical members and friends. I really enjoyed this book. It's for mature readers. It was definitely worth losing some sleep over. You won't regret it!
I actually liked this one a bit. The first one was a no no no..
In this one Mateo is actually a "nice" guy. Maybe I'm easily persuaded too, can be. I liked Meg a lot! She was feisty a tid bit weird and a lot of ballsy. But for being a mom full time going to seeing your precious girl so little it didn't seem to matter to her. I don't have kids so I don't know how I would act, but I think I would be more scared for her and trying to be with her all the time.
I like Adrian but I'm not continuing this journey. It's been enough for me.
Don't let my review stop you! Many people loved this series so it's a me not the book thing!
I knew I was going to love everything about Mateo Morelli and I'm happy to know I was right ..
In the first book he was a dick, but you were still drawn to him and wanted to know who this overwhelming man was ..
He's so unbelievably sexy and so damn charismatic ..
How could you not melt into a puddle right in front of the dangerously sexy man?!
And Meg was amazing to read too ..
So funny and so charismatic in her own goofy way, that I'm in love with her now ..
She had every right to be sad and scared of her situation, but her personality wouldn't let her be, and I appreciated that about her ..
Their story had everything to me!
It made me laugh, scared me just a bit and got me hot and bothered ;) I mean, how could you not be? It's Mateo flippin Morelli ..
This is a definite must read ..
If you're looking for a book to keep you at the edge of your seat and keep you locked in from beginning to end, "Surviving Mateo" is that story.
Can't wait to get to Adrian's story, I know Sam won't disappoint!!!!
This book definitely holds my heart! Meeting Meg and how she was introduced to everyone and her relationship with Mateo. Watching Mateo's softer side blossom made me fall in love with him even more, haha. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm so happy I did! I'm going back to the beginning to read Sam's very first two books then tie in to the story before book 3 to get the full effect. I also love Meg! From her being honest wth Mateo, her quick wit and the love she has for him makes my heart melt. I can't say I'm not jealous she's with Mateo, haha. Mia has me a bit worried and it was also nice to be introduced to more of the family. Seeing more in to Mateo then what he usually shares. I'm ready to see how the rest of his pans out because I know it's ever a dull moment in the Morelli family. Without a doubt, a must read!! Get involved with his family, you won't regret it!!!

I must say, I am very conflicted with this story. I love the plot, and I am a plot girl, so if I don't love the characters, it's not the end of the world. And it's not so much that I don't like Meg or Mia. It's more like I can't relate to them because I would never in a million years react the way they do.

I will try to minimize spoilers, but there will probably be some. When Mateo finds out Meg is trying to kill him, he threatens her daughter by putting her in a crate and dousing it with what she believes to be gasoline. She strikes a bargain with him to save her daughter from a fiery death. She will be his maid/concubine. I am totally on board and would do the same thing.
But then she develops <em>feelings</em> for him. This monster terrorized your daughter. Even if she wasn't scared to begin with, she would get that way pretty fast when she sees her mother screaming and crying. Do what you gotta do, fake it for your daughter, I get it. But.Do.Not.Fall.In.Love. If I read a Tinder profile that said something like "Sexy mob boss. Will threaten your offspring, put you in a dungeon, and will possibly kill you if you betray him", I'm pretty sure that would be a deal breaker for me.
If Mia is naïve and too trusting, then Meg just isn't very bright. When Mateo thinks Meg is cheating she apologizes that he had to read text messages she never wrote. She tries to comfort him even when he insults her. Heck, by the end of her time in the dungeon I'm beginning to believe she cheated on him, too.
Like I said, I would do what I needed to do to keep my daughter safe, but I wouldn't ever make him feel good for insulting me. I'd be the ice queen around him. I would deny, deny, deny, and never admit to something I didn't do. I would definitely not be welcoming him into my arms or feel pity for him. He's the one who is in the wrong.
It was the ending of this book that saved it for me. While I can't wrap my head around Meg's thought processes, I am interested in what happens next. It's definitely going to be interesting.
