We may have a Saint Chesterton pretty soon. I guess he is rewarded for being a well-known convert to Catholicism. He was very opposed to Protestants and was accused of anti-Semitism to boot. Sigh.
This book is a collection of short stories about Father Brown, an unlikely and Sherlock-like sleuth. Father Brown, however, is a prototype of many successful British spies (rather than sleuths) to come. You will recognize the "ordinary look" of Father Brown in the mysterious Peter Quayle, created by Peter Cheyney. This hero comes in the war series with "dark" in the title such as The Stars are Dark. does not have the series yet, but all the Lemmy Caution (an American hero) from the same author are available. Similarly, I think that the character of George Smiley in the stories of John Le Carré, is indebted to Father Brown (see for instance Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ).
I found the book fairly dated when I read it the first time, some 50 years ago. I did not change my mind. You would think that he wrote in the early 19th century instead of the start of the 20th. The style is ornate and at times tiresome. The theological inklings are more mean-spirited than instructive. The preoccupations of the author are also from another generation than his own.
Most of the stories are not believable, they are an abstract construction to create a mystery.
If reading Chesterton attracts you, prefer The Man Who Was Thursday (Illustrated Classics). It is a better book.
Was a brilliant story. Found it .exciting , intriguing and it kept you guessing, till the end. That's how I like them.
Though a little different to the television series we are enjoying right now, I have enjoyed these simple and entertaing stories.
These are short mysteries just right for waiting to be served at wherever. The setting is antique, but excellent puzzles sometimes solved by the reader, but not often
You know how you can't wait to sit down or go to bed so you can read, anticipating the moment when you are back on the page you left the night before? This was not it for me, so I just didn't finish it.
Sure, Father Brown, a deceptively sharp and insightful priest, delicately unwinds the tightest nefarious plots but, without strong cappuccino, I found it impossible to finish any of these short pieces in one sitting. Pleasant enough but more like kissing your grandmother.
I so enjoyed the suspense and humor in the stories and Chestertons understanding of our flawed humanity!
However, the best part is that each short story is well crafted and... short! I compulsively read good books to the end because I feel impatient to know what happens. This keeps me up half the night and ruins me for the next day. These wonderful short stories allow me to "get my fix" of a little distraction to wash away thoughts of the day's troubles, but are a quick read so that I can go to sleep KNOWING the ending!! Fabulously helpful!
